A brief round-up
It is great to report that, since my last bulletin in May, our members are taking full advantage of good weather and a course in great condition. In my 28 years as a member of Ramsey I can seldom remember seeing the course in better shape and a big thank you must go to Neil, Richard and Matt for their hard work and, indeed to Dave Stewart who is also dedicating three days a week working on the course.
I guess it is not surprising to see the course busy most days with both members and visitors, and we are receiving many compliments, especially from those playing Ramsey for the first time. There certainly seems to be a renewed interest in golf and it is very encouraging to see such a surge in new members since play resumed. As a committee we are working hard to improve the new member experience with the creation of a welcome pack and induction programme. You will spot many new faces around the club so please do extend the hand of friendship when you bump into them and offer and help they need.
As you know, we provided a band of course marshal volunteers during the first three weeks back and I am delighted to report that, with very few exceptions, observation of the safety guidelines has been excellent and members of the Ramsey public seem to have reverted to public footpaths and seem to be heeding the various notices around the course. Now that we are allowed four balls, the course marshal rota has been suspended, although you will see members of the golf committee keeping an eye on things at busy times and helping to rake bunkers.
I would also like to acknowledge the “multi-tasking” currently undertaken by Scotty and offer my thanks! He really has been under pressure dealing with constant phone calls, new member applications, buggy hire and all those other duties that fall into his lap. There is no question that the more we, as members, can embrace on-line tee booking and (soon) competition entry and payment, the easier the burden will become!
The Ram & Medals
As reported in my last bulletin, although we have had to scrap our normal competition programme detailed in this year’s club diary, we are now up and running with some competitive golf.
Despite the deterioration in the weather, we had an encouraging thirty players in our first two RAM stableford events on last Saturday and Sunday. The competitions committee will publish the winners and runners up shortly and also give you more information on how to enter and pay on-line for future competitions. We will also clarify how best to score in future competitions. There will normally be a prize for winner and runner-up in each event but, in the unlikely instance where fewer than 12 players participate, prizes will be restricted to the winner only. As mentioned, a proportion of every entry fee in the RAM will go to the NHS Together charity at the end of the season. Future dates for RAM qualifiers are:
June 17th, 20th, 21st, July 1st, 4th, 5th, 15th, 18th, 19th, 29th
August 1st, 2nd,12th, 15th, 16th, 26th, 29th & 30th.
The final will be held on September 2nd. Please note that several of these qualifiers are on Wednesdays so five day members can participate!
This weekend (13th & 14th June) there is a medal competition (play either but not both days). These competitions give you a great chance to get handicap qualifying rounds into the system so please support them. Book your own tee time and play with your normal partners!
I am sorry to say that we have now had word from Guernsey advising that they will not be able to honour our September fixture. Flights, ferries and hotels are still not functioning and they have decided to cancel all planned matches. We will therefore use 2021 to celebrate our 5oth anniversary of this fixture and do our best to make it very special!
And finally ……
Due to the severe impact that the Covi-19 pandemic has had on all sporting activities, the club has very generously, offered me the opportunity of extending my captaincy by an extra year. I am very grateful to Vice Captain Paul Judge for fully supporting this and look forward to a less complicated second term!
Good golfing to you all
