I am sure that all you golfing and bowls members are delighted to be back using our great facilities, especially with this spell of dry, if not very warm, weather! It is remarkable to think that our course was under so much water just a few weeks ago and the recovery has been truly amazing! We really do owe a debt to our green’s staff, and I know many members have already expressed their thanks for all the work that has been undertaken!
Those of you who have played will have been impressed with the condition of the course, and it is clear that the enforced rest has benefitted some areas that were less than perfect last year. I understand from Neil that more sand has been ordered for the bunkers and I hope that our band of course volunteers will help with the distribution of this when it arrives. You may well have noticed that the tree surgeon has carried out further work on the course, removing damaged limbs and overhanging branches. A program is in place for further tree maintenance as part of our on-going improvement plan. Volunteers have begun planting hedging along the boundary of the small additional piece of land acquired behind the 11th green. This land will provide the opportunity to build a new competition tee for the 12th although I should add that this is a long term project and plans are not finalised.
Royal Guernsey 50th Anniversary Match
In my last update I confirmed that the visit by Royal Guernsey in May has been cancelled but that we are optimistic our visit to Guernsey in September will go ahead. I did ask for those interested in making the trip to let me know and am grateful for the response so far. Our “Provisional list” is:
Steve Bradley, Mark Thurmott, Mark Langford, Chubby Simpson, Phil Ackers, Gary Easingwood, Chris Seeley, Hugh Cameron, Paul Judge, Jayman Mistry, Ian Cornthwaite, Mike Kjenstad and myself.
I am sure I have missed one or two and we certainly have room for more so please let me know if you would like to be included!
Accommodation has been reserved at the Grange Lodge Hotel for four nights from Tuesday 14th September to Saturday 18th September. The cost per twin room to include breakfast is £122 (£61 per person). The hotel is centrally located in St Peterport. We play golf on Weds, Thurs and Friday and details of this will be provided nearer the date.
At the moment, travel options are still not completely clear but, checking the web-sites, flights with Arigny from Gatwick on Tuesday 14th @11.55 returning on Sat 18th @ 14.40 would work. A seat plus cabin bag is £121.98 plus an extra charge for golf bag. (group price to be confirmed). Alternatively, several have expressed an interest in travelling by ferry. At the moment, according to the schedule, the only advertised option is from Poole on Monday 13th returning Saturday 18th. (no crossings on Tuesday 14th so far). Price for a car + 3 passengers is £496 return. However, it is likely that the schedule will change once travel to the island recommences and I will advise accordingly.
If you have not made the trip before I am sure you would enjoy it and we would love to see one or two “virgins” join us. Give me a call if you would like to discuss!
Charity Four Ball Voucher
I just wanted to say a thank you for supporting the Captain’s Charity draw for the Peterborough Milton four ball voucher last Saturday. We raised over £90 which will be split between my charity and the course improvement fund. The winner was PAUL HODGKIN so congratulations go to him! There will be a further voucher on offer this Saturday when you reach the starter’s table for The Brand Cup so please have another go! By the way, there were four “IOU’s” last Saturday on the draw sheet, so please settle up this Saturday!
The Greens committee have asked me to thank all those who have entered the Masters Sweepstake. I understand we sold all the tickets, so good luck! All profits go towards course machinery.
RAM Midweek Stablefords
The first of our RAM midweek stableford competitions start next Wednesday 14th April. These are open to all members, with full handicap allowance. The top two scores on the day will qualify for our final on Bank Holiday August 3oth with prizes for each qualifier and the handsome RAM trophy which is now a major board competition. There is no draw so you can enter on the day with your preferred playing partners via the How Did I Do App (using “Today’s Golf) and it may also be possible to enter via the terminal in the Pro’s Shop subject to Covid guidelines, although this option will be confirmed from the competitions committee in a separate communication. This is a great way to get some cards in for handicap so please look out for future dates as denoted in the club diary.
It is very encouraging to report that our influx of new members continues with a further nine signing up in the past few weeks. Please remember that our Junior section is beginning to grow so if you have a young family member interested in taking the game up, then please do get in touch with Stuart, Mitch or Neil Barnes who looks after our Juniors. Remember our new indoor swing studio will be up and running shortly offering great tuition opportunities for adults and juniors!
May I close by saying how great it is to be playing golf again and seeing so many of you out on the course. Please do not hesitate to contact myself or any committee member with your suggestions or, indeed if you would like to volunteer ………….. all help is greatly appreciated!
