SEASONAL SWING
On Wednesday 27th Dec we have the Seasonal Swing competition, mixed pairs any combination, you can enter on How Did i DO.
Captain Vice Challenge Book
IPC Phil has kindly had a book printed reliving our captain vice challenges this year the book is behind the bar, if anyone would like to have a flick through. Myself and Phil had a wonderful time in those Matches.
Pitch Marks
With the recent wet weather the greens can be soft, could we all try to look out for any pitch marks that might be around – I know its a bit of an old chestnut (forgive the Christmas pun), but it really helps with the recovery time.
It just remains for me to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from myself and all of the committee .
All the best Captain Mark
Chairman’s Bulletin December 2023
Dear Members,
With Christmas fast approaching, I wanted to give all our members an update on board activities since our new management team was formed at the end of October.
Board Personnel
As you are probably aware, we expanded our team from seven directors to eight and, following the election at the AGM, welcomed two new directors onto the board. I have pleasure in attaching the make-up and responsibilities of each board member, a copy of which will be posted on our clubhouse notice board or (See here).
Clubhouse Catering
I know that many of you have expressed concern that the kitchen has been closed on certain days, especially on a few recent Sundays. At the AGM we announced that cover had been arranged to avoid this but, unfortunately, that particular arrangement fell through. I am, however, pleased to advise that a new member of staff will be joining our hospitality team in January, which should provide the cover we require. I would like to take this opportunity to thank one of our members, Andrew Jones, who very generously donated both a hot and chill cabinet for our bar areas, allowing us to provide hot snacks and sandwiches on those occasions when we had no cover. Andrew has also assisted in helping us procure a new, card operated, coffee machine which is due to be installed in the next two weeks. This will ensure that quality hot drinks are available seven days a week!
Till System & Bar Cards
Some of you may know (especially our volunteer staff) that we have been operating with a very old till system behind our bar that is certainly no longer “user friendly” and fails to cope with modern demands. I am pleased to share the news that a brand new “state of the art” till will be installed in the next few weeks and that we will be issuing all our relevant members with a new bar card. This should be of great benefit to our staff, speed up service at busy times and provide Judith with all the accounts information we depend on.
Clubhouse Repairs
For some time we have been suffering with a succession of water leaks in the clubhouse, stemming from problems with deterioration to parts of our flat roof. We are indebted to John Harris who has carried out an inspection of the problems and is helping us arrange the necessary repairs. Thankfully, it appears that specific problems will not be too expensive to rectify and the hope is that this work can be completed in the very near future. The most immediate problem relates to our gents shower room which must be attended to before we can proceed with the planned refurbishment.
Gents Toilet and Shower Refurbishment
Immediate past captain Phil Ackers, who is leading the project, has already circulated an outline illustration for the planned refurbishment and posted copies on the notice board. We really would welcome any help our members can give for the work that needs to be carried out during this refurbishment so, if you are a tiler, carpenter, plumber, electrician etc. willing to donate some time, even at “mates rates” please let Phil, Scotty or myself know. Thank you to those who have already been in touch!
Course
As already advised, new winter mats have been purchased and placed temporarily to provide much improved and safer winter tee conditions on some holes. These are similar to the mats situated in our practice nets and are high quality and durable. The aim is to site these on concrete bases when time and weather conditions allow.
We are very pleased with the continued improvement to the five greens which were subject to major drainage work back in September. Although a considerable investment for the club, we are convinced that this has been money very well spent.
Social Media and CCTV Policies
One of the questions raised at the last two Club AGMs was whether we had a policy in place with regard to Social Media. I can advise that this, plus one relating to our CCTV installations, are both now on our club notice board. Copies can be obtained from Judith if required.
Office Hours
Our administration office on the upper floor has been closed since Covid hit, with Judith managing to carry out all necessary office tasks from home. Whilst we have no plans to re-open the office,(indeed this may well be re-purposed) Judith will, from the New Year, be in the clubhouse (lounge area) working two hours in the morning on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Should you need to query anything on the admin front, then Judith will be happy to help you on either day.
Richard & Patsy
I cannot close my first bulletin, without paying enormous tribute to my predecessor, Richard Coles and also Patsy of course! Over his ten years in charge, Richard steered the club through it’s darkest financial period and must take huge credit in stabilizing our finances, leaving the club in a very healthy position. I am so pleased that we got the opportunity to give Richard and Patsy a proper send off a few days before their move to Norfolk. It was a lovely evening with a packed clubhouse and we were delighted to award lifetime membership to them, in the hope that they will re-visit often and use the club facilities.
Finally, may I take this opportunity, on behalf of your management team, to wish you all a very merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Captain’s Letter dated 30th November
Dear member.
I would like to start this email with a big thank you from Lady Captain Margaret and myself to everyone for making our drive in a day to remember .
We were honoured that so many attended making our day so special .
Well done to Lady Vice Captain Sharren Kjenstad and Jim Watts who guessed the distance of our drives.
Thank you Sharren for donating her winnings to the ladies project, and to Jim for donating his to the Captain’s charity.
Head green keeper Richard has let me know that the new Mats have now been put on the teeing area grass. They will have the rubber cross tee pegs put in like the ones in the practice nets. They will be salted when frosty. And they will be put on a level concrete base when he has access to a mini digger .
Captain’s Charity
My charity this year is Lymphoedema Research Fund
Press here to view a letter from professor Peter Mortimer explaining their work.
Thank you to everyone who has donated money so far through the Captain’s cabin.
The cabin will be open this Saturday and my helper will be IPC Phil Ackers .

Cheque Presentation to ‘It’s On The Ball’ Charity
On Friday 17th November, the Club proudly hosted the CEO and trustee of the Cancer Awareness Charity ‘It’s On The Ball’.
Vince Wolverson and his wife Anne delivered a very informative testicular cancer awareness talk to a packed audience.
Everyone learned something, and a very important message was delivered with humour and dignity in equal measure.
Following the talk, IPC Phil Ackers proudly presented a cheque to Vince for £4000 on behalf of the Captain’s Charity.
The evening was rounded off with a fun Xmas quiz, generous buffet and prize raffle.
IPC Phil thanked Vince & Anne for the talk & quiz, everyone present for their support, and all the Members who supported the charity throughout the year.
