As it has been almost two months since our last bulletin, I wanted to let all our members know of the progress we are making on several fronts which, we hope, will make your membership experience even better during 2024.
As I write this bulletin, I have just returned from the club where we are, yet again, suffering flood problems, with the brook having breached the bank between the 6 th and 18 th . Clearly this is something way beyond the scope of any course drainage system and most clubs in the Cambridgeshire area are also closed due to similar, if not quite as extreme, conditions! I would like to thank our greens staff for the sterling work they have done, particularly in unblocking the main drain on the 18 th which is now functioning properly. Head Green Keeper Richard, is in on-going dialogue with The Environment Agency and engineering companies to find a cost effective solution to improve our ageing drainage system, and we do have some grounds for optimism on this front. Once we determine the best course of action, we will let you know our intentions.
I am pleased to report that we appear to have made good progress in respect of hospitality cover, especially at peak times. Many of you will already have met our new member of staff, Alesha, who has joined us on a part time basis, principally assisting Bex behind the bar but also will help in the kitchen when needed, and gain some catering experience under Sarah’s careful eye.
Further good news is that one of our members, Chris Dugdale, who is a very experienced chef, has agreed to help us on most Sundays and Bank Holidays as well as providing holiday cover for Sarah and Jerry. On the odd Sunday where we cannot offer a full kitchen service, the Captain’s Cabin will operate and we will also provide hot bar snacks from 11.00am.
We are continuing our search for additional kitchen cover and will keep you posted on any developments!
Till System & Bar Cards
In my December bulletin I announced our intention to introduce a new till system behind the bar and replace existing members’ club cards. I can confirm that the new till should be installed next week and, hopefully, new cards can then be issued. This should be a tremendous help to Bex and team and assist Judith with bar accounts.
Clubhouse Repairs & Maintenance
We have been severely hampered in moving forward with repairs and refurbishment, due to the persistent heavy rain. However, we are indebted to John Harris, for arranging the removal of the old extractor above the gents showers and re-sealing the flat roof. There is still further work required to make this part of the roof completely water tight before we can forge ahead with the internal refurbishment of the gent’s facilities.
Hopefully we can make progress in the very near future.
Bar / Dining Room Upgrade
We are hoping to obtain some outside funding that will allow us to give our main hospitality area a make-over. This would entail improving the lighting through modern LED replacement fittings, re-decorating all walls and gloss work (modern, lighter colour scheme) and replacing carpets / floor coverings. It would also be our intention to sand and treat the hardwood floor in the dining area. Further details will be announced once firm plans are agreed.
It would significantly help our expenditure budget if a few members with decorating ability could assist in the painting of the lounge and dining room. This would need to take place on Mondays when kitchen and bar are shut. If you are able to help, would you please let me know so that materials etc can be organised?
Intruder Alarm Replacement
Our outdated existing alarm system has been causing us lots of problems over the last few years with regular “false alarm” faults occuring, often in the middle of the night. These have caused us many irate calls from the council and neighbouring residents! Despite our best efforts, repairs have proved impossible, forcing us to consider alternatives. I am pleased to confirm that a brand new, wireless system, was installed this week which will now give us excellent protection and be much more user friendly!
Meadow Lane Land
A few members have asked whether there is any news on our efforts to obtain planning or sell the old practice area on Meadow Lane. As most of you are aware, our application for planning fell through on our last attempt three years ago. I can confirm that progress on this front remains a priority and that we are currently in discussions with interested parties. We remain cautiously optimistic that a positive outcome can be reached but, of course, this is likely to be a lengthy process.
The increase in our membership and popularity of our golf and bowls facilities, is putting great pressure on our car parking capacity at peak times. This will only become more acute as the weather improves and competitions commence. Could I please ask for your help in making sure you park efficiently and avoid taking up more space than required? This really would be appreciated!
Let us hope that the weather takes an upturn and that we can all look forward to fully enjoying our club very soon! Thank you all for your on going support!
