Captain’s Update 2 Oct
Dear Members,
September was a busy time for me with the pinnacle being the trip to Guernsey. Eighteen friends accompanied me to take on the challenge, of which the Royal Guernsey golf course is not the only one!
Entertaining the Royal Guernsey Men and Ladies, building friendships and ensuring the continuation of the reciprocal event that has been played for 54 years was the focus! That we achieved and then some!
The whole trip provided challenges, the Red Lion tested us; China Red was a duck shoot. The Chophouse fillets were awesome, but the evening tried to trip us up financially when presented with a £768 drinks bill, the first item showing was 43 pints of Staropramen lager; even I know my team couldn’t have nailed that much in three hours. Issue negotiated and shared with the Guernsey men.
The Royal Guernsey Clubhouse was welcoming and the catering was lovely and we were well looked after. The golf course was amazing as usual with the Ramsey Men off like hares, to a commanding lead! The Friday matches started strong but the wily Guernsey tortoises had kept something in reserve and managed to pip us on the line! Winning by just 2 points, their relief was palpable and we graciously admitted defeat, knowing we had them worried.
Many Gents then had their baptism in the sea, the annual bracing dip that sets you up for a hot shower and your best suit. Very personal speeches by the Newbies went down a storm and the six Gentlemen received their Guernsey ties, a great Friday evening had by all!
Seven of the team were travelling home on the Saturday, leaving twelve to wander round the neighbouring isle of Herm and then back to St Peters Port for posh nosh in Le Nautique. Many lobsters were harmed that night.
On the 20th September we had the Golfers vs Bowlers event. A fun afternoon expertly organised by Lady Captain Linda Day and Tracey Core. Killer Bowls, Target Ramp, Chipping and Putting. Some Golfers played better Bowls than they did Golf and some Bowlers chipped and putted like Pro’s. The end result was an honourable draw! Beer with hotdogs and burgers called the event to a close.
Saturday 26th we had the 51st Annual Past Captain’s event.
Vice Captain Ashley Butten received the nod from the Past Captain’s secretary Ian Cornthwaite and the Committee and will be your Club Captain for 2027.
Then the stableford competition was played and Past Captain Phil Ackers took the spoils with 41 points and received the Tankard while Mike Robinson graciously accepted the Ram for coming last. The sumptious evening meal in the Clubhouse was wonderful and washed down with wine and port.
Friday 2nd October our Lady Captain Linda and her team of excellent Ladies played the semi final of the Jean Wilkinson at St Neots GC vs Newmarket Links Ladies. A 3-2 victory saw Ramsey ladies progress to the final there vs Royston. A valiant effort by all but were sadly beaten 4-1. An amazing effort to get to the final, which hasn’t been done for many a year. Congratulations to the team and Linda!
On Sunday 4th October we have the last board comp of the season. The JH Brown is a shotgun start betterball stableford off the yellow tees. Always a great event and this year all the tees are loaded up. Those starting at the far end of the Course can park at the 13th. Scorecards can ce collected from the Pro Shop from tomorrow lunchtime. Don't forget to sign in and await the 8am horn start ready on your tee.
Two four ball vouchers are up for grabs, South Kyme and Stoke Rochford, with the proceeds going to my Captain’s Charity - The British Heart Foundation in memory of a friend and club member Rich Powley.
Lastly we have another Club Member that has his sights set on American golf. Ryan White is headed for Virginia in January and has been signed by the Bluefield Rams to play Collegiate golf in the US. 4 years in Bluefield University studying for a degree in Exercise and Sports Science while playing in the NAIA. Ramsey Golf Club wishes Ryan the best of luck and proud Dad Stuart will keep us informed of Ryan’s progress.
Thats it for now,
Captain Rich
