Update from Men’s Captain Rich

The Captain’s Year starts from the November AGM, so I can’t believe I am already a month into my term. Everyone says it will go quickly! I hope I can keep up the pace.

First came the ‘Drive-In’ on Sunday 16th November; a fun filled, drink fuelled afternoon very ably organised by Vice Captain Ashley Butten and Ladies Vice Sarah Brooke. This annual event welcomes the new Captains and waves goodbye to the outgoing ones with games on the first tee, a drive off and putt out; all finished off with a roast dinner.

The following Saturday 22nd November saw the’ Hail and Farewell’ organised by the outgoing Captain’s Derek Lines and Sharren Kjenstad. This event being their last hurrah to thank those that have helped to make the year a success. Dinner, speeches and dancing till late into the evening, superb in every way!

The last two weeks I have been beavering away organising a team to take on the annual tour to Royal Guernsey Golf Club. This reciprocal event has been fought for the last five decades, with the Guernsey Men coming over to Ramsey in May and us going there in September. My task is to organise matches here and then take a team of gladiators over to Guernsey, hopefully to bring back the trophy.

Lastly I am opening the half way hut on the 10th tee on Sundays. Cooking bacon and sausage baps, teas, coffee and soups. A welcome treat on a cold Sunday morning, with the proceeds going to my Captain’s Charity. Heartfelt thanks goes to Cromwell Foods for supplying the first round of sausages, bacon and baps for free. The last two Sundays have been successful raising money for the British Heart Foundation in memory of Club Member Rich Powley.

I hope all the golfers are enjoying the course now we are heading into Winter. It is obvious that the recent drainage improvements are working wonders, as long as the flood water stays in the Brook.

Please look after your course, especially the high travelled areas and greens. I watched many players from the 10th Hut on Sunday, avoiding the fairway altogether just for this reason; some only used the tenth fairway when playing the 12th. Well done!
