Captain’s Address 17 April 2026

The last couple of weeks have been busy, the weather dry and behind the scenes organising proved successful!
The Course had essential greens maintenance alongside daily mowing. Drying winds and no rain has slowed recovery but by May the greens should be slick and holding. Worthy of the great reputation that has been built up over the years.
On the 4th April, the first major comp was the Bogey Cup. A tricky format with the player versus the Course. It was won by TJ Harding, second was Phil Rose, followed by Jason Thomas and then Vice Captain Ash Butten.
The 4 ball voucher for St Ives GC was won by Kris Gibbs.

Thursday 9th April the Junior Section committee members Lucy Mills Cripps and Martin Hollands organised the first meeting and swing studio extravaganza for the Junior Section and future members. Seventeen prospective new and current Juniors attended. Long Drive and Nearest the Pin fun entertained everyone, along with expert tuition from Martin. The Club was buzzing and the future looks bright for the weekly roll ups for any young person that wants to play and learn.

Saturday 11th April welcomed the Brand Cup. Medal format. A tough day at the office with firm greens and breezy conditions.
No problem for Jason Woodward who won, followed by Andy Coulthurst and in third Roger Tacq. The four ball voucher for Ely was won by Hugh Cameron.

On Wednesday afternoon, 18 Junior players attended the first roll up, all turned up early and keen. Expert tuition from Martin Hollands in the nets, chipping and putting started it off. Nine holes played by the older ones and five by the younger future stars. Lots of fun, a little rules and safety education as it went along, but the lads had a blast. Thanks to Lucy, Martin and other parent/members that attended a supervised. The next is organised for next Thursday 23rd.

This Saturday 18th April welcomed welcome the Anniversary Bowl. Pairs greensomes stableford format which is usually a giggle, both driving off the tee and then alternating with the chosen ball. What can go wrong?
The four ball voucher up for grabs is one for Barnham Broom GC in Norfolk.

On a sad note, Ramsey Golf Club lost a club legend, Past Captain, Past President and all-round good guy and friend -John Brooks.
Deepest condolences, love and Club support go out to Barbara Brooks and all who knew him. John’s final journey is on Thursday 23rd April at Huntingdon Crematorium followed by a wake/ celebration of his life in the Clubhouse.
Legend status always leads to a rammed clubhouse, drinks and stories. I’ll probably find something out about the Gentleman that I never knew, but I can tell you that he was 87 years old; married to Barbara for 65. Ramsey Golf Club has been a focus in his life!
“Brooksie would have loved it!”  Will no doubt be mentioned many times when the Clubhouse is full on Thursday 23rd.
Thank you,
Captain Rich
