Bob the Builder – Can we fit it….?
Challengers No 28 were relative new Members Craig Eagling and Lee Bassett.
Both being in the building trade, Capt & Vice knew they were up against it.
Only two shots to be given, it was very tight on handicaps (on paper anyway!)
The first challenge was ‘Would the builders turn up on the right day?’
Lee was a last minute stand in for Dan Edwards who got a better offer; juggling two jobs at the same time no doubt!
The Challengers tee’d off at 4pm…..3 hours after knock off time.
It was going to be a tall order to get the 18 holes in before dark…..but the builders ‘estimated’ that they could do it.
Off to the first
Boasting about their eagle on the first in the Valentines Day Scramble, the builders only managed a half.
Not the solid ‘foundation’ they were hoping for.
All Square
A par on the second by Builder Lee was enough to ‘cement’ their first hole win.
1 Down
Bogies all round on the 3rd and off to the tricky 4th. Not so tricky for Builder Lee who ‘drilled’ his putt & sank a birdie.
2 Down
Onto Capt & Vice’s favourite £2k hole.
Vice on the green and Capt just off.
Both secure a par but Builder Lee trundles in a par too. There’s ‘mortar’ this Builder’s game than meets the eye.
2 Down
On the 6th, the Builders were nowhere to be seen….not on the 6th fairway anyway.
Builder Craig decided to check out another job on the 17th, & Builder Lee checked a job out on the 16th

On the 6th, the Builders were nowhere to be seen….not on the 6th fairway anyway.
Builder Craig decided to check out another job on the 17th, & Builder Lee checked a job out on the 16th
A bogey for Vice was enough to get one back.
1 Down
Capt secured a par on the 7th with a long putt while the Builders enjoyed ‘shovelling’ in the sand.
All square
Builder Craig finally turned up for work with a bogey on the 8th as Capt and Vice double bogied to lose the hole
1 Down
Vice couldn’t make use of his extra shot on the 9th and Capt went OOB.
Builder Craig kept a level head and sent one ‘plumb’ down the middle, ‘paving’ the way for a hole win.
2 Down
Over the road (no traffic lights needed) and Capt secured a win with a par.
1 Down
Builder Lee missed a putt on the 11th for par so shared the hole. Apparently, the ground wasn’t level.
1 Down
On the 12th, Capt & Vice struggled down the left with the trees and Builder Craig couldn’t resist another play in the builders sand. Builder Lee ‘nailed it’ though with a bogey
2 Down
The light was beginning to fade already, but no stopping for a tea break.
13 was won by the Capt as Builder Lee hooked into trouble and Builder Craig only managed a 5.
1 Down
A shared half on 14 was followed by a closely fought 15th.
Builder Lee and Capt hit 240+ yd drives down the middle.
Builder Lee first, and he hit the green lower level….that was a ‘wrench’ for Capt & vice.
Capt was pin high but off the green left.
Capt chipped on as Builder Lee putted up the hill…but not enough pace….…nobody ‘saw’ that coming.
He blamed the landscapers.
Both sunk the putt to share the hole with pars.
1 Down
Onto 16 as darkness was really closing in.
A par for Builder Lee was enough for another win as they ‘hammered’ home their advantage.
2 Down
Serious poor light now on the 17th.
Nobody could see the balls leave the tee.
All hoped for the best…and all 4 balls were found!
Vice on the green, Capt 20yd short, Lee close to OOB and Craig short of the green.
With the flag at the back, Capt played a blind chip. ‘No idea where that went!’
‘Good shot’ was heard from the darkness and it was somehow 4 feet from the pin. A par followed for both Capt & Vice to win the hole and ‘bolster’ their confidence.
1 Down 1 to play – ‘Dormer’
A position Cap & Vice have found themselves in many times….and escaped…..but now it was pitch black.
‘Wood’ it happen again?
All 4 tee off in total darkness. I phone torches on.
3 tee shots ‘felt and sounded good’……Builder Craig’s didn’t! Thats him ‘screwed’.
Over the bridge, and hopeful of finding at least one ball.
Torches in hand and looking like UFOs flying over the 18th fairway…the search began.
A bit of a first for the Builders………..still be working after dark.
Capt & Vice balls were found quite quickly on the fairway in ‘plane’ sight.
Builder Lee’s was more of a challenge, but it was eventually found in light rough.
The remaining 3 players had no idea where the flag was…pitch black by now.
Builder Lee first……….and apparently into the bunker.
Vice next…’no idea where that went’…but its found on the green.
Capt next ‘that felt good’ but it was found in the bunker!
With I phones lighting the balls, both Builder Lee & Capt thinned their bunker shots and assumed they were OOB…..a real ‘wrench’ for the Builders.
Vice’s putt up was a little short. A huge sucking of breath!
Builder Lee had hit a poplar and bounced back! A good chip and he secured a 5.
Vice now had the chance to win the hole with a par to level the match…….just missed!
Capt & Vice were down the ‘drain’ and the Challenger’s delight was obvious from the shouting and dancing in the dark……a real ‘English bond’ between the two Builders.
Lost 1 Down
Our thanks to Craig & Lee for taking on the challenge.
It was a great match with great company and good fun.
Non of the players will ever forget playing the last few holes in total darkness…..and yet there were pars!
Next and final Challengers…..Trevor Brown & Adam Daly
Current Record: 18 Wins 0 Draws 10 Loses
